Lagos tracker: Alakija road project uncompleted and abandoned halfway

by Chinedu Okafor

It is hard to decide what’s worse: government negligence on a pressing issue or abandoning an issue which we believed the government has resolved to tackle. With the new Alakija road project, the latter seems to be the case.

A project embarked on in less than two years suddenly had its operations seized for reasons unknown to us.

The roads which were meant to be fixed, supported with flyover bridges to ease the traffic congestion residents and applicants of the roads usually had to battle with, has been unduly abandoned.

Residents in the area claim that by mid last year they had noticed the reduced frequency in the involvement of the Chinese people in charge of developing the roads and soon after, there was simply no envelopment of construction workers all together. The project was said to be contracted to CCECC.

This abandoned project not only creates a new type of traffic problem, it also creates an overcrowding issue, as a lot of market people have sought to take advantage of the uncompleted roads to set up shop, displaying their products out in the open to motorists and passers-by, for the convenience of the on the go buyers, and this is quickly creating a congestion problem, which ultimately leads to a sanitation problem.
