Why is the Ojota Second Pedestrian bridge taking long to complete?

by Ajadi Daniel

There is no doubting the fact that the construction of the second pedestrian bridge at Ojota has taken more than the amount of time stated on the project signpost. According to the project sign post, the project is supposed to be completed within four months of its commencement. The project started more than seven months ago and it is yet to see the light of the day, and there is no assurance that the project would be delivered by the end of January except if the Lagos state authority do the needful.

Why has the project taken this long to complete? why is no one saying anything on this or giving an explanation as to why the project is being delayed? could it be for dearth of funds or unseriousness on the path of the contractor? The people have the right to know, the principal body or Ministry of Works and Infrastructure in the state should look into the matter and nip it in the bud.

The essence of that project is to reduce the pressure on the first bridge and ease movement for those who want to cross to the other side of the road, but that would continue to be a dream as long as the contractor continues to drag on the project.

The implication of the continual delay in the delivery of the second pedestrian bridge is the weakening of the first which would be a result of the increased number of people who are bound to use the bridge on a daily basis, another defect of the continual delay of the project would be distrust in the hearts of the people towards government, because if the Lagos state government has stopped pedestrians from using the express road, then the onus is on them to provide an alternative. The alternative provided is taking so much time to come.

It is important that the Ministry of Works and the Lagos state government hasten the contractor and issue an ultimatum to ensure that the project is finished in no time.

YMonitor also wants to suggest that the Lagos government when engaging a contractor, should enforce whatever agreement they have as regards the specific or agreed time for the completion of a project.

Ojota pedestrian bridge is taking too long and the commuters cannot continue to wait forever.

We urge the Lagos State governor and the Honourable commissioner of Works to address this as urgent as impossible.
