YMonitor Issue 74: #NoToSocialMediaBill

Nigeria opened Whatsapp & is about to join the exclusive Whatsapp group chat of African countries taking fundamental human rights & dropping it into the gutter.

Backed by renewed anger & contempt over the increasing call for accountability from all the corners of social media, most especially the notoriously unkind “bird appp” & micro-blogging site Twitter.

Literally, looking over their timeline, the country’s government is deciding to unfollow, block, mute, report anyone who pushes the concept of freedom of speech. Anyone caught in the wildfire of this “tweet-fight” is likely to be cast to keypad warriors to feed.

The fact that this bill’s admins are people most likely not “socially-inclined” to differentiate between upload, retweet & repost is even more profound.

Over the past week, the Northern Governors have intensely made strategic moves to clamp down Social Media activities by regulating it. Two bills to that effect have resurfaced & the coconut head Nigerians do not have it with this bug.

The two bills are: National Commission for the prohibition of Hate Speech & Protection of Internet Falsehood, Manipulation & other related offenses.
