As part of its aim to stimulate active citizenship especially among the youth, YMonitor; an initiative of The Future Project which highlights crucial accountability and governance issues, organised a Grassroots Engagement between officials of Surulere Local Government and members of its constituents.
The engagement which took place on Tuesday, 13th of March, had officials of The Future Project (TFP) expatiating on the importance and aim of the program. All Councillors representing the main 9 wards in Surulere Local Government were in attendance. The Local Government Chairman, Honourable Tajudeen Ajide showed up briefly at the event alongside his Vice, Hon. Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, also in attendance was the Secretary of the Local Government, Prince Honourable Dosunmu among others.
A total of 120 participants were present at the engagement cut across members of various associations such as Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Surulere Youth Council, Women Association, Association of persons with Disability, Chairmen of Community Development Association (CDAs), as well as private citizens.
The program gave participants the opportunity to ask their elected officials questions relating to their stewardship in office. Questions raised cut across issues such as poor implementation of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative in Surulere Local Government, the poor state of some inner and link roads, duties and responsibilities of their councillors, most of whom they claimed have not fully been active in office. The councillors were each given time to address the questions posed to them, as well as account for their time in office and what they have achieved so far, with tangible and trackable achievements.
Responding to questions posed, the Vice Chairman, Hon Sulaimon Yusuf promised that issues raised and which were within the purview of the LGA will be addressed. The Secretary to the Council also commended TFP for the platform and opportunity to engage with members of their constituents.
