YMonitor works to promote good governance and empower citizens to have a more significant say in the decisions that affect their lives. Founded in 2016, YMonitor has made a substantial impact on governance in Nigeria by helping communities to advocate for their rights and hold their governments accountable.
In 2022, one of the organisation’s essential programs is a civic program – #MyVoteMyVoice – that trains and encourage community members to participate in elections. Through this program, YMonitor helped register over three thousand voters, and trained over six hundred electoral advocates.
In addition to this civic programme, YMonitor also supports the development of transparent, and accountable Local Government (LG) administrations. This includes surveying citizens’ opinions, supporting the development of effective policies and laws that promote LG autonomy, and working with civil society organisations to hold the LG accountable for their actions. For instance, over 9000 people were sampled in 91 local governments in Nigeria.
The impact of YMonitor work is evident in the success stories of the programmes they execute. For example, with support from the Future Project and National Endowment for Democracy, YMonitor organised The Nigerian Symposium for Young and Emerging Leaders 2022 to hold discussions pertinent to the 2023 elections. The symposium was host to ten renowned speakers and over 300 participants.
YMonitor efforts have not only benefited individual communities but also the broader society by promoting good governance and the rule of law. By empowering communities to participate in the democratic process and hold their governments accountable, YMonitor is helping to build stronger, more just societies.
Overall, the performance of YMonitor has been truly transformative in the communities they serve, and its impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
