Despite the challenges faced by Nigeria’s education sector and calls for the government to increase funding to the sector, Nigeria’s education sector has only languished a small per cent of the national budget for the past several years.
While the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommended that at least 15% to 20% of the nation’s budget be allocated to the education sector, we discovered that the highest education allocation in the last ten years was 10.7% in 2015. The lowest was 5.6% in the 2021 national budget.
