The Freedom Of Information Training
The training equips participants with the knowledge of the Freedom Of Information Act, as well as how to make a request & several other reference materials that can aid in getting information from government/public institutions.
About the Programme
The FOI training will ensure further increase in awareness & interest in the Act. It would serve as a benchmark towards sustaining the increasing culture of demanding transparency in governance. It could further help improve performances of public officials & institutions, by serving as a tool of accountability therefore checking their activities.
The Freedom Of Information Act
The Freedom of Information Act 2011 (FOIA) ensures that public bodies and organisations uphold the principles of transparency and trustworthiness when it comes to storing and sharing information. It outlines how and why organisations must share details of their activities with the public. In this training, you will learn about the history and purposes of the FOIA, how it is implemented and what it means for Nigerians in our strive for a performance-driven government.
You will learn:
- Why the Nigeria government passed the FOIA, the principles behind the act and the bodies that fall within its scope.
- The circumstances under which information falls into the remit of the act, who can make a request for information and how organisations should respond to requests.
- The main duties you have under the Act, including the duty to proactively publish information detailing the activities of your organisation.
- Additional resources that would help you during the training of making a request.
- Personalised experiences from our facilitators experience engaging with the Act.
Structure of the Training
This innovators/ambassadors will continue to engage students in higher institutions, youths on how to use the guide & the FOI Act. While the Ambassadors will continue to create awareness about the Act & process of making a request.
Representatives will be chosen.
Six (6) geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
Inducted as FOI ambassadors.

FAQ's
Anyone who has an interest in learning more about this subject matter is encouraged to take the training. There are no entry requirements to take the training.
The training is broken down into (2) days. Each day would have facilitators take different aspects of the Act & they would share their experience using the Act, averaging 30minutes per session.
There would be a pet project where the trainees would be shared into groups & they would present their strategy, resources (letter) through which they use to make a request. There would also see several smaller tests & assessments during the course of the training.
There would be e-certificates given at the end of the training during the induction of trainees as ambassadors.
Yes, the session (s) will be virtual/remote.
