In any democratic society, party agents are an essential part of the electoral process. In Nigeria, party agents play a critical role in ensuring that elections are free, fair, and transparent. They are the eyes and ears of political parties on the ground, monitoring the voting process and ensuring that voters’ rights are respected.

Who are party agents?

Party agents in Nigeria are the guardians of the vote, keeping a watchful eye on the electoral process and ensuring fair play.

What are the roles of party agents?

They monitor voting, challenge voter eligibility, prevent rigging and report any irregularities.

They mobilise voters, campaign for their party, and communicate their message to the electorate.

Trustworthy agents are essential to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and reflect the people’s will.

Before voting at voting venues, they inspect the polling venues, and polling booth, examine the polling venues’ equipment and materials, examine the ballot box to ensure it is empty, and witness the sealing of the ballot box by the presiding officer (PO).

What are the responsibilities of party agents?

Perform their role according to rules, code of ethics and laws governing the electoral process.

Strictly respect and comply with the Electoral Act 2020

Cooperate fully with instructions of the electoral officials assigned at the registration, polling and counting venues.

Bring to the attention of the electoral officials assigned at the registration, polling and counting venues any action they consider is not following the provision of the election rules.

Refrain from speaking or attempting to influence any voter at the polling venues.

What are the rights of party agents?

Unlimited access to the registration, polling and counting venues at all times;

Observe the registration, polling and counting processes on behalf of their political parties at designated venues where they have been deployed;

Ensure that the registration, polling and counting processes are conducted per the rules and regulations governing the procedures.

File a claim/objection to any action which they consider
