by Ajadi Daniel

The Federal Executive Council yesterday approved the construction of a power plant in Kaduna capable of generating 215 megawatts of electricity.

Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing hinted this while briefing newsmen alongside his colleagues in the Ministry of Information, Budget and National Planning at the end of the FEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fashola said the project was awarded in 2009 to be completed in 2012 but was abandoned. He also said the council has approved the construction of a substation to evacuate 40 megawatt of power from the Gurara hydro electric power plant phase 1 in Kaduna to enable it interconnect to Mando transmission substation.

According to Fashola, “Council approved 215 megawatt Kaduna power plant. The memo sought procurement and implementation defects and lack of budget support for the project which was started 2009 and should have been completed in 2012, but we are now in the position that we can complete this project by next year to add 215 megawatt of power to the national grid

“In particular, we will dedicate some of the power to Kudan dam in Kaduna to support industrial complex.
