State police as proposed by the National Assembly may not be the way to go, at least not in the present circumstances, until somethings about the present Nigeria police force are addressed, most of which are constitutional. We have argued on this policy direction at YMonitor, and out take has been that it would be a disaster to to duplicate the present police structure at the state level. The problem with the Nigerian Police is institutional and state police isn’t the solution yet.
To get the pulse of Nigerians on this policy direction by the National Assembly, YMonitor conducted an online poll, as king the people if they think state police as proposed by NASS will put an end to the security challenges of Nigeria. We gave three opinions, the first was simply Yes, the second was “I don’t think so” while the last option was “Undecided”. At the end of the 24 hours poll, 64% said they don’t think so, 28% said yes while 8% were undecided.
It is important that the government is not hasty to take a decision that is not well thought through or debated. The current policing system is a menace and there is a problem with the Nigerian security architecture, if we must duplicate the present system, we must first and foremost address the constitutional impediments, and the issues that makes it incapacitated.
After this, we can then begin to consider duplicating at the state level.
