The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have started investigations into how the ecological funds disbursed to state governors under president Goodluck Jonathan regime were spent.
The decision to investigate the funds was based on reports that states that benefited from the fund failed to use it for the purpose it was meant for. This came up recently when the President had a meeting with the 36 state governors, and the governors from the southeast pleaded with the President to release money from the fund to enable them address the various ecological problems faced in these states.
You would recall that Ymonitor recently conducted an investigation into the use of ecological funds to ascertain whether the funds have been used for the purpose they were meant for, and we discovered that most of the state governors cannot account for this fund.
Ecological fund is an intervention facility established to address the multifarious ecological problems ravaging communities, such as flood, coastal soil erosion, desertification, drought and general pollution. The fund is two percent of the federation account, and it is placed on first line charge.
